Stunning Art Nouveau print by Seder of chestnuts 1890
[8039]
£45.00
Anton Seder, a painter from Munich, was the first director of the Ecole Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (College of Decorative Arts), founded in 1890 by the city of Strasbourg as part of a plan for the artistic revival of the region. The school specialised in architecture, painting, sculpture and furniture design. Seder co-edited the magazine Das Kunstgewerbe in Elsass-Lothringen [The Arts and Crafts in Alsace-Lorraine]. His best known work is Die Pflanze in Kunst und Gewerbe [The Plant in Art and Trade] (Gerlach & Schenk, Vienna: 1890), which incorporated plants into decorative motifs. He also published Das Thier In Der Decorativen Kunst [Animals in Decorative Art] (Gerlach & Schenk, Vienna: 1896-98), similarly combining animals and mythical dragons into decorative motifs.
This superb chromolithograph is from Die Pflanze in Kunst und Gewerbe and is one of the ultimate manifestations of Art Nouveau design. Its sinuous lines and use of naturalistic motifs is very typical of the movement. The work also shows signs of baroque revival and Japanese influences. Many of the designs from this collection were by Seder himself and show his hallmark intertwined AS signature in varying forms, from prominent to almost undetectable. Other artists for the work include Birkenger, E. Unger, Franz Patek, H. Kaufman & E. Klimt.
The designs Seder produced for Die Pflanze in Kunst und Gewerbe are breathtaking in their beauty and originality, the apogee of Art Nouveau yet also so fresh and modern. The colours are intense and rich, often highlighted with gold and silver illumination.
